 | WHO SHOULD GO: Hikers, cyclists and
equestrians. |
 | HIGHLIGHTS: Trail climbs to 2600 feet
offering one of the Central Coast's finest views. On a clear day there is a
unlimited view of the coast and interior wilderness. On a summer day the
Morro Bay in fog is an enchanting sight. |
 | LOCATION: Between the towns of Atascadero
and Morro Bay. |
 | HOW TO GET THERE: From Hwy 1 or Hwy 101 take
Hwy 41 to Cerro Alto Campground, located about halfway between Morro Bay and
Atascadero. The Forest Service campground is on the south side of the Hwy. |
 | WHERE TO PARK: Park on a wide spot of the
road just after entering park road. Horse trailers may need to back out or
drive into campground to turn around. Do not block the road. |
 | TRAIL CHARACTER and DISTANCE: The trail
begins by crossing the stream bed on the west of the road. This steep, rocky
trail climbs 1600 feet and is a challenging ride for advanced cyclists. The
views of Whale Rock Reservoir, Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, Atascadero and
the Temblor Range is the reward for the steep climb. Continue into and
through the eucalyptus grove and onto the ridge. Choose to travel the TV
Tower Road, to climb Cerro Alto summit to 2600 ft, or drop into the
campground on the ATT cable route. Distance riders or hikers may 'figure 8'
the loops to cover up to 20 miles. This trail also connects to the West
Cuesta Ridge and always offers outstanding views. |
 | CAUTION: Most of the trail is unshaded,
so an early start is advisable in spring or summer. Rattlesnakes and poison
oak are plentiful, protective shoes and long sleeve shirts are suggested.
Remember, this is a multi-use trail. Cyclists, hikers and equestrians may
easily share the trail by using caution and courtesy. Horse manure needs to
be removed from the parking area. |
