How to Get There:  From San Luis Obispo, drive south to the Highway 166 exit.  Turn left (east) drive 25 miles.  A short distance past the Rock Front Ranch turn left over a cattle guard into a parking area identified by a Forest Service sign board.
Trail Character and Distance:  Pick up the trail a t the northeast end of the park area.  Two miles of winding trail through the spring wildflowers ends on a an old ranch truck trail.  After passing through, the trail becomes a strenuous climb for about 2 miles.  There is a spectacular view of Hi Mountain, Miranda Pine Mountain and the Carrizo Plain is present all along 2 miles of easy trail.  Three miles of very steep decline creates a loop back to the ranch house.  Returning to the parking area on the same trail allows an opportunity to recall the terrific view after the arduous climb.  Spring is the best time to visit the Gifford Ranch to enjoy wildflowers ; winter provides the best viewing time with its clear skies.
Caution:   Summer can be very hot.  Rattlesnakes like this are and are most prevalent in the spring , so be aware.
