 | Who Should Go: Hikers, Mountain bikers and
Equestrians |
 | Highlights: A nice winding trail with some
climbs and wondrous views. In the spring there is an abundance of
wildflowers. |
 | How to Get There: From San Luis Obispo,
drive south to the Highway 166 exit. Turn left
(east) drive 25 miles. A short distance past the Rock Front Ranch turn
left over a cattle guard into a parking area identified by a Forest Service
sign board. |
 | Trail Character and Distance: Pick up the
trail a t the northeast end of the park area. Two miles of winding
trail through the spring wildflowers ends on a an old ranch truck
trail. After passing through, the trail becomes a strenuous climb for
about 2 miles. There is a spectacular view of Hi Mountain, Miranda
Pine Mountain and the Carrizo Plain is present all along 2 miles of easy
trail. Three miles of very steep decline creates a loop back to the
ranch house. Returning to the parking area on the same trail allows an
opportunity to recall the terrific view after the arduous climb.
Spring is the best time to visit the Gifford Ranch to enjoy wildflowers ;
winter provides the best viewing time with its clear skies. |
