WHAT:  Pismo Beach Grand Dune Trail
WHO SHOULD GO: Walkers, bird watchers and equestrians.
HIGHLIGHTS:  Wildflowers and birds are abundant in this modest introduction to the Nipomo Dunes area.  Watch for the white-tailed kite, the Audubon warblers and the red-wing blackbird.
HOW TO GET THERE: From San Luis Obispo take U.S. 101 south to Highway 1; follow Highway 1 to Grand Ave.
WHERE TO PARK:  Park in the lot to the west.  Rigs with horses can park in parking lot and empty field next door.  (Be sure to clean up all horse manure).
TRAIL CHARACTER and DISTANCE: The trail begins on the south side of Grand Avenue, directly across from the unused kiosk in the parking lot.  A deep sand dune trail leads south for tow miles to the Oceano Campground and the beach.   Point Sal is a 15 mile ride south.
CAUTION:  Busy weekend traffic in the off-road vehicle area may be distressing to horses.
