WHAT:  Pinnacles National Monument
HIGHLIGHTS: The monument displays ancient volcano formations, represents four different plant communities and is home of eagles and falcons.  A spectacular place to visit and enjoy.
WHO SHOULD GO: Hikers and campers
HOW TO GET THERE: Take Highway 101 north from San Luis Obispo to King City.  Exit onto G13, follow the signs to State Route 24, then north 19 miles to the entrances.  The trip to the Pinnacles is beautiful, especially along Highway 25.
WHERE TO PARK:  There is a $4 day use fee payable at the entrance.  Ask where to park.
TRAIL CHARACTER and DISTANCE:  Check out the visitor center for the history of the park and acquire a map of the trails.  All trails are well maintained and delineated.  Beginning across from the center is a trail with a steady moderate climb for 1.7 miles to a junction with other trails.  Several overlooks allow for spectacular views with many sightings of birds and opportunities to observe many varieties of plant communities.  Using a map and the trail signs you many choose to create several loops back to the visitor center.
CAUTION:  Many of the climbing routes are closed from Jan. 15 for several months to allow bird nesting.  For more information regarding this and available camp sites, call ahead to the Pinnacles National Monument in Monterey County at (408) 389-4485.  Dogs must be on a leash.
