Sierra Madre Road

Where:  East of Santa Maria
Who Should Go:  Hikers, Mountain bikers and Equestrians
Highlights: The road climbs to the summit of Miranda Pine Mountain at 4,061 feet, affording spectacular view of the Cuyama Valley to the east.  The hike is forbiddingly hot and dry in the summer, but inviting in the spring with many blooming wildflowers.
How to Get There:  From San Luis Obispo, drive south to the Highway 166 exit.  Turn left (east) drive 25.5 miles.  A short distance past the Rock Front Ranch turn right on Sierra Madre Road.
Where To Park:  Choose a turnout along the Sierra Madre road.
Trail Character and Distance:  This is a dirt road in reasonable condition and the footing is good.  Miranda Pine Campground is reached after 9 miles of moderate climb with beautiful view.  Camping here will allow enjoyment of splendid sunset and sunrise.  The Sierra Madre range possesses a network of trails and campsites.  Plan on several days or a return to the area. 
Caution:   Water is not available, so plan on toting all the water you may need.  Summer can be very hot.  Rattlesnakes like this are and are most prevalent in the spring , so be aware.  Can be windy.
