El Chorro Regional Park Off-Leash Recreation Area

SLO-4-PUPs (Committee of SLOPOST)

A nonprofit 501C3 Foundation

WHO ARE WE?

SLO-4-PUPs is a grass-roots organization created to encourage San Luis Obispo County to provide areas for off-leash recreation for people and their dogs. In 1999, SLO-4-PUPs became a subcommittee of San Luis Obispo Parks, Open Space and Trails Foundation (SLOPOST), a non-profit group with tax-exempt status. SLOPOST works with the County to promote public/private partnerships that increase recreational opportunities for all. SLO-4-PUPs is now raising money and coordinating development of the first, fenced, off-leash recreation area in San Luis Obispo County.

WHAT IS AN OFF-LEASH RECREATION AREA?

Off-leash recreation areas, also known as "dog parks", are public areas where people can safely play with their dogs off leash. Here, dogs can romp and socialize with each other. These designated areas in public parks are for people who want to spend recreational time with their dogs in an outdoor environment. They are also places for people to meet and socialize with others who love dogs. In addition, these areas offer a place for numerous activities and events, such as obedience and agility classes, dog shows, humane education classes, low cost vaccination clinics, and doggie/people parties or picnics.

WHERE WILL IT BE?

El Chorro Regional Park is located on Highway 1 about half-way between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay, opposite Cuesta College. The off-leash recreation area will be located at the end of the paved road, beyond the playground, ballfield, and Botanical Garden. The area will include a covered shelter, barbecue pit, picnic tables, paved handicapped access, water fountains for dogs and people, benches and an information kiosk. There will also be a separate, fenced area for small or shy dogs.

MISSION STATEMENT
